The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated worldwide on February 11. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2015 to raise awareness of the importance of gender diversity in scientific research. The aim is to encourage girls and women to pursue careers in science, engineering and other areas of science and to overcome the gender barriers that still exist.
This year, for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Kiel University (CAU) has published a special series of portraits presenting female researchers from various disciplines, their contributions to science and their personal motivation. The Cluster of Excellence is also represented by five women: Joana Bernardes, Alba Troci, Saskia Weber-Stiehl, Johanna Saalfrank and Lina Welz. All of them are also (associated) members of our research unit.
Promoting gender diversity in science is not only a question of equality, but also crucial for progress in research. Integrating women and girls into science means promoting the development of knowledge in all areas and creating equal opportunities.
Kiel’s female scientists will be portrayed on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/kieluni/) and LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/school/kieluni/) around February 11.
