Kiel Microbiome Center Event Series
We are extremely happy to announce a unique series of events on the microbiome in Kiel that will be held on Sept 23-26, 2024.
Registration for each individual event is now opened: https://ww3.unipark.de/uc/registration-kmc-events/ .
This series of events is supported by NFDI4Microbiota, Kiel Life Science (KLS), miTarget and the Global Microbiome Conservancy.
Sept 23: Kiel Microbiome Center kick-off event (13h30-16h)
The new KLS Center dedicated to microbiome science was created in 2024. Kiel Microbiome Center (KMC) is a trans-faculty hub dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary research, innovation, and collaboration in microbiome studies.
- The kick-off event will showcase presentations on KLS & KMC visions, on areas of microbiome research by Kiel University group leaders (Thomas Bosch, Hinrich Schulenburg, Corinna Bang, Silvio Waschina, Christina Hölzel and Mathieu Groussin).
- The event will also host a presentation from Eric Alm, Professor of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Prof. Alm is co-director of the Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics, and will share his vision and experience in leading a cross-faculty microbiome research center.
The kick-off event will be followed by a reception, with food and drinks, from 16h.
If you want to become a member of the Kiel Microbiome Center, please email Sonja Petermann (spetermann@uv.uni-kiel.de) to receive an application form.
We are also pleased to announce that the KMC website has officially launched! You can explore it here: KMC Website
Sept 24: 1-day conference on microbiome science and ethics (9h00-17h00)
This conference aims to showcase presentations on the latest developments in microbiome research and ethics, bringing together worldwide scientists and thought-leaders, including:
- Eric Alm, Professor of Biological Engineering (MIT), co-director of the Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics
- Ran Blekhman, Professor of Genetic Medicine (University of Chicago)
- Thulani Makhalanyane, Professor of Microbiology (Stellenbosch University), Editor in Chief (ISME Journal), Senior Editor (mSystems)
- Mathilde Poyet, Professor of Intestinal Microbiology (Kiel University), co-director of the Global Microbiome Conservancy
- Amber Scholz, Head of the Science Policy & Internationalisation department at DSMZ (Leibniz Institute)
- Pascale Vonaesch, Professor of Fundamental Microbiology (University of Lausanne)
- David Ellinghaus, Professor of Biomedical Informatics (Kiel University)
- Alexis Zimmer, Professor of Anthropology (Liège University)
A panel discussion with presenters and participation from the audience will follow presentations to discuss on the most sensitive ethical considerations on doing microbiome science worldwide, including in low-and-middle countries. Topics will include, among others, representation bias, access and benefit sharing, post-colonial scientific practices and language, and data and privacy protection.
Sept 25-26: Workshop on Microbiome Bioinformatics (9h00-17h00)
This workshop aims to provide trainings on bioinformatic methods for microbiome data analysis and visualization. Scientists from both Kiel and the Global Microbiome Conservancy network will participate in the event. 15 slots for scientists from Kiel are still available – register quickly!
- The core analyses of the Workshop will focus on the processing of unpublished microbiome data from the Global Microbiome Conservancy cohort.
- The workshop is accessible to beginners in bioinformatics and microbiome data analysis.
- Workshop instructors include Olga Brovkina, Malte Rühlemann, Ana Schaan and Eike Wacker, all from Kiel University.
We look forward to hosting you for this series of events! Don’t miss the opportunity to meet and network with renowned scientists, and to receive training on cutting-edge bioinformatic techniques!
